Classic American Route from Chicago to Los Angeles
Sorry, no slots available for 2009
Italy offers a variety of incredible
scenery, culture, and of course great food.
The classic Italian ride begins and ends in Milan and includes the Cinque Terre region, the countryside of Tuscany, and the awesome hairpin turns of the Amalfi Coast road on the cliffs above the ocean of the Amalfi Coast south of Naples.
Cinque Terre or "Five Lands" is a series of five towns on
the Mediterranean Coast between the mountains
and the sea. The towns were isolated from the rest of
Italy for hundreds of years before a road was built over the
mountains to reach them.
From
Cinque Terre you will ride through the countryside and vineyards
of Tuscany to the medieval town of Lucca just outside Florence.
We will have an option day here where you have the option of
riding through the area or taking the 20 minute train ride into
Florence to see its rich collection of art including
Michangelo's David. We may also arrange for you to take a
cooking class while in Tuscany on your option day.
The town of Sorrento is a great place to spend a couple
of days. Sorrento is at the top of the Amalfi Coast
and less then an hour by train from the ruins of Pompeii and
Herculaneum.
Sorrento is also the jumping off point for
the ferry to the Isle of Capri and the Blue Grotto.
Although a modern town, some of the roads there were made in the
days of chariots and are barely wide enough for a small car.
The most common vehicle in Sorrento is the Vespa.
There are few roads in the world that compare with the Amalfi coast road. To say that it is dramatic is an understatement. The road runs along a cliff high above the sea.
Picturesque towns like Positano cling to the
cliffs above the sea along the Amalfi coast road.
